21 November marked the premiere of Wtedy. W powojennym Krakowie [Back Then. Post-war Krakow], a moving book by Joanna Olczak-Ronikier, winner of the Nike Literary Prize in 2002. The author shows post-war Krakow, where her family found their haven after years of devastating armed conflict. The reader learns about post-war Krakow from a double perspective: the memories of then ten-year old Joanna and the carefully preserved documents that her mother and grandmother collected. This created an unusual picture: colourful and saturated with emotion, yet precise like the work of a historian, moving and beautiful. The writer masterfully shows how the world looked at this special time, between one disaster and another. The book was under the patronage of Krakow UNESCO City of Literature and the Krakow Festival Office.
